What
is
Hypnosis and
How Can It Help Me
Stop Smoking?
There are many definitions of
hypnotism or hypnosis but we
believe the simplest is often the best, so here is the simple
definition of Hypnosis:
“Hypnosis
is a method of communicating directly with the part of the mind
responsible for habits.”
Humans are creatures of
habit. Think about something you do automatically, like
driving a car. You don't have to think consciously
about accelerating, braking, turning, etc., because your unconscious
mind takes care of it for you.
Your unconscious or subconscious
mind is your
auto-pilot. Its job is to take repetitive behaviors, i.e., things that
you need to do over and over again, and make them automatic so that you
can do them without thinking.
Have you ever noticed yourself
with a cigarette in your mouth and forgotten how it got there?
That's because smoking is an automatic behaviour. The process
of lighting a cigarette and bringing it up to our mouth
several hundred times a day (at an average of 10 puffs/cigarette and 20
cigarettes/day that's 200 times we lift a cigarette to our mouth)
creates a very powerful habit.
If smoking were a conscious behaviour, you just decide to quit smoking
and you'd just stop, but it doesn't work that way because smoking is
controlled by the unconscious mind.
The
Unconscious Mind
You have 2 main parts to your
mind. First, there is the conscious
mind, which which is the logical part of the mind that
we use to think with and plan.
For example, right now you are
consciously
aware of reading these words, you may be thinking about how to quit
smoking, or whatever else that your conscious attention
is currently drawn towards.
When you first began to smoke,
you didn't start out smoking 20 or 30 a day. You were very
conscious of the fact that you were smoking and it took a lot of effort
and will power. After a while your unconscious mind recognized
that this was a repetitive behaviour, and it
took over that repetitive behavior so your conscious mind was free to
think about other things. This is the point where smoking was
something you were "just doing", and it was no longer easy for you to
"just quit".
Many people try to change habits
using
conscious will power. Will power alone often proves to be not only
ineffective, but extremely hard work.
What’s more, it
can be frustrating when you try to stop and fail; try again and
fail.
Hypnosis is a method of
communicating
directly with your unconscious mind where habits are kept, then
changing them in an easy and relaxed way. This is a far more healthy
and positive approach than trying to force change to occur.
Einstein once said, "Imagination
is more
important than knowledge." Those who understand hypnosis know that
imagination is more powerful than will power. Imagination is of the
subconscious mind; will power is of the conscious mind.
Your
Typical Hypnosis Session
Working with a trained
professional hypnotherapist, the object of hypnosis is to achieve an
altered state
of consciousness.
This is usually achieved by
closing your
eyes, relaxing the conscious mind, and then using the power of your
imagination to communicate the change that you wish to occur to your
subconscious mind.
Once the hypnotherapist has
guided you into
the state of hypnosis, then it's easy for you to influence your
unconscious mind. You will be able to change life-long habits such as
smoking, overeating, irrational fears, phobic responses, etc., with a
minimum of fuss.
It's all done, not through
struggling and
forcing things, but through relaxing and enabling the more powerful,
unconscious mind to assist you in whatever it is that you want to
achieve.
Think of your unconscious
mind as a
miraculous computer that pretty much does everything for you. All that
hypnosis does is enable you to reprogram your personal computer so that
it is working for you rather than against
you.
We are all creatures of habit,
and habits, for better or for worse, control most of our lives.
When you can get control of your
habits, then
you have control of your life. Hypnosis is a method of communicating
directly with the unconscious mind where habits are kept…
so
you can once again take control of YOUR life!
Hypnosis is not a method of mind
control. No
one can control your mind except you. Hypnosis is merely a
means
through which you’re in control of your habits by
re-programming
your subconscious mind!
